The thyroid is responsible for the hormones that affect your metabolism while also helping to manage your bones, heart, nervous system, and other organs. Hypothyroidism is the result of your thyroid underperforming, or more specifically, producing an inadequate amount of hormones for the regular development and function of the body.

Causes of Hypothyroidism

According to the American Thyroid Association, anyone can develop hypothyroidism, but it primarily affects women. The chances of developing the condition are higher during pregnancy and menopause.
